JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Police were investigating a fatal shooting Wednesday afternoon in the Brentwood area.
Officers said 64-year-old Hardy Rouse was shot at about 1:30 p.m. in the 3700 block of Peachtree Street. He was transported to Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center, where he died.
Police said Rouse was sitting on his front porch and was shot by someone in a passing car.
"Me and him were just sitting on the porch and we just heard gunfire," said Eric Walker, who was next to Rouse when he was shot. "When I looked down at him, I seen a gunshot to his arm section, arm and chest section."
Family members said he died for no reason.
"He was a good man," said Mose Rouse, Hardy's brother. "Everybody in the neighborhood liked him. Everybody liked him."
Police said Hardy Rouse was not the target of the shooters. They said there was a dispute between others who lived on the block, adding that there have been problems in the past.
"A car pulled up, fired several rounds down the street and did not strike the intended targets, what we think were the intended targets," Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Lt. Larry Schmitt said. "A stray round caught an individual that does live on the street."
Hardy Rouse's friends are in mourning. They said he will be missed.
"He was a good person, that's for sure," Hardy Rouse's friend Denny Richardson said. "He would do anything for you. I've seen him give his lunch to people at lunchtime before that didn't have anything to eat. He used to give to me years ago. That's just the type of person he was."
Police said they are looking for the shooters in a black Impala.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 866-845-TIPS.
