ORANGE PARK, Fla. -- A Fleming Island family still trying to come to grips with the death of two children at the hands of their father has scheduled a funeral for Sunday.
Clay County detectives said 11-year-old Katie Whitelaw and 16-year-old Kevin Whitelaw were shot in their sleep early Tuesday morning by their father, Jerry Whitelaw, who then shot and killed himself.
The mother came out of the shower to find her family dead.
"If there is a way to come to terms with the loss of our dear loved ones, we know that it will only be through God’s leading us day by day, and the love and support of family and friends," the children's grandfather wrote in a statement released Friday morning. "We were speechless Tuesday evening at the number of people that took time out of their lives to come to the candlelight vigil and express their sympathy and support.”
Kevin Whitelaw attended St. Johns Country Day School and played on the football team. Friday night before the game, his teammates honored him by dedicated Kevin's jersey to his mother. Teammates also painted an image of his jersey on the football field. A school official said it will likely be there permanently and re-painted if it ever fades.
School headmaster Greg Foster said, "Probably the only gratifying thing this week is the kids, the teachers all came together ... reformed the family."
A memorial service for the children will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Grace Episcopal Church in Orange Park.
Anyone that would like to help the Whitelaw family with funeral expenses can donate to the Dana Whitelaw Family Fund, account 251-845-244, at any Compass Bank.
