PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. -- Florida Highway Patrol investigators said John Herbert, 50, of Green Cove Springs, was in critical condition Sunday morning after being hit by an SUV while riding his motorcycle.
According to authorities, Herbert was driving south on U.S. 17 in San Mateo when his motorcycle was hit from behind by an SUV being driven by Thomas Entrott, 44, of Pomona Park. After the initial impact, FHP troopers said Herbert's motorcycle became attached to the front of Entrott's SUV and was dragged for more than 500 feet.
Herbert, who police said was not wearing a helmet, was taken to Shands Hospital in Gainesville with critical injuries. Entrott was not injured.
The official FHP crash report said tests to determine whether or not alcohol was involved are still pending.
