Woman Drives Off Road, Seriously Hurt

Deputies Say 26-Year-Old Checked Phone, Lost Control Of Vehicle

POSTED: Tuesday, November 10, 2009

St Johns County Sheriff's deputies said a woman suffered serious injuries after she drove her vehicle off the roadway and was ejected.

Deputies said the single-vehicle crash happened in the 10500 block of County Road 13 North in St. Augustine.

Traffic officers said the driver, 26-year-old Marsha McLeod of Hastings, was driving southbound when she said her phone started to vibrate due to a message.

Deputies said McLeod went to check the message when she drove off the roadway, over-corrected, lost control and hit a tree.

Investigators said the vehicle then flipped over, landing on the driver's side. They said McLeod, who was not wearing her seat belt, was ejected from the vehicle and landed more then 70 feet from her vehicle.

She was life-flighted to Shands Jacksonville.

Deputies said no charges have been filed and the investigation is continuing.
