JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A Westside woman had her golf cart swiped right out of her backyard in June, and after an intense search for the cart Mary Romeo said gave her independence, it was found but wasn't working.
So how is she doing five months later?
Romeo is crippled with arthritis and has severe osteoporosis. She depends on her golf cart to get around.
"I wish they'd return it to me," she said at the time. "I wish they would realize how important it is to me, how much I need it."
After Romeo's story aired, Channel 4 was flooded with phone calls from people who wanted to help.
When the golf cart was found broken, a family stepped up and gave her a gently used one.
Romeo said since then, the news story made her a star.
"I'd be out in the grocery store and people would say, 'I'm glad you got your golf cart back,'" Romeo said. "I became really popular."
Romeo said she's been doing a lot of gardening and is still taking care of her cats. But unfortunately, she said her health hasn't been so good.
"I was having chest pains and my blood pressure was 210 over 90," she said.
Romeo said she's had to call 911 a few times and as a result has gotten to know the men at Fire Station 14 in Ortega.
She said they have been looking after her.
Romeo even stopped her interview with Channel 4's Jennifer Bauer because she wanted go to the fire station to talk with the firefighters.
"We've got a great bunch of men at Fire Station 14," Romeo said. "That's the truth."
