JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A brother and sister both serving in the military came together for a special ceremony Friday morning, even though they're thousands of miles apart.
Najma Grant is a Navy petty officer in Jacksonville, and Nevery Berry is an Army chief warrant officer stationed in Iraq. But through the power of Skype, Berry was there to help his sister Grant re-enlist in the Navy.
Grant said she tries to keep in touch with her brother as much as she can through letters and phone calls. But Friday's chat was no doubt a little different for the two.
Grant re-enlisted in the Navy, and Berry officiated the ceremony via Skype, a voice call application used via the Internet.
"It's 6 p.m. where he is, so for him to be able to do my re-enlistment, I'm very happy," Grant said.
Grant did admit there's some rivalry between her and her brother. Berry has been in the Army for 12 years. This is Grant's fourth year in the Navy.
"So he was like, 'See if you can beat that,'" Grant said before laughing. "So it's a big competition."
Johnny Grant, the siblings' father, said he still can't believe he can see his son from halfway around the world.
"You can talk to a person in Iraq now during war time. It's amazing," Johnny Grant said.
Najma Grant's commanding officer Anthony Corapi is just as proud to welcome her back.
"It's great for the Navy that she decided to stay on board," Corapi said. "To have her doing it using technology with her brother in Iraq, that tops my day."
Grant said she will stay in the Navy for another two years. Her brother though, she said, is in it for life.
"To my sister's chain of command in the Navy, thanks for taking care of my sister," Berry said via Skype. "And I just wanted to say, 'Go Army Navy.'"
