JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- It was a day of remembrance and honor as a grateful community and a local family paid their final respects to a fallen hero.
Services were held on Saturday for a Jacksonville soldier killed in Iraq. Chief Warrant Officer Earl Scott III, also known to his loved ones as "Scotty," was laid to rest.
The 24-year-old died Sunday when his helicopter crashed during his second deployment in Iraq. His funeral was held at All Saints Chapel at NAS Jacksonville.
Scott's flag-draped casket was front and center as friends and relatives one-by-one reminisced about his life, and his legacy.
The Army also awarded Scott's family with a bronze star in recognition of his service in Iraq.
"I love him so much. I know he's very well missed. But I think he's gonna carry on a lot of good for our world right now in everybody's memories," said his mother, Sandra Scott.
Men and women held flags and saluted Scott as his casket was being driven away in a procession.
Scott was buried in a private service at the Oaklawn Cemetery.
