Teen Arrested In Fatal Hit-And-Run

Rescuers Say Man Found Unresponsive On Timuquana Rd.

UPDATED: 5:59 pm EST November 17, 2009

The Florida Highway Patrol said an 18-year-old driver of a pickup truck who struck and killed a pedestrian Monday night and then drove off was arrested about three hours after the crash.

Jacksonville Fire-Rescue responded to the fatal crash just before 8 p.m. at the intersection of Timuquana Road and Seaboard Avenue in the Wesconnett area.

Rescuers said Alphonso Dow, 65, of Jacksonville, was unresponsive when they arrived and died at the scene.

The FHP report said Dow was walking south on Timuquana when he was struck. Troopers found part of a headline and side-view mirror from a Ford F-150 pickup truck at the scene.

Troopers found Seth Miguel Davis and his vehicle on Roosevelt Boulevard, about 4 miles from the crash scene.

Davis was charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving death and was being held in the Duval County. A judge ordered Tuesday afternoon that his bond be set at $100,000.

"He does seem like a good kid," Davis' attorney Neil Weinreb said. "He does not seem like to me like he would be any type of a flight risk or a danger to the community whatsoever, so I do hope that his bond at some point will be reduced to a more reasonable bond."

Friends of Dow said they are grieving his loss.

"He's going to be missed," said Pauline Durden, a friend of Dow's. "He had good talent. He was nice. He was quiet."

Weinreb said the felony charges Davis is facing is also tough on the 18-year-old's family.

"I think anybody's family would be quite upset having someone charged with felony and a very serious crime," Weinreb said. "He basically is a good kid that just graduated from high school fairly recently and was planning to attend college. So I think it would upset any family if those plans were interrupted."
