JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Thousands of travelers in airports across the country were delayed for hours Thursday morning as the result of a computer glitch.

Flight officials said a piece of communications equipment in Salt Lake City failed, delaying flights in all time zones.

Officials said the network that coordinates flight plans between air traffic controllers went down for about four hours.

Officials said no one was in danger, but because the planes had to be manually entered into the computer system, it slowed things down significantly, and in some cases flights were canceled.

In Jacksonville, travelers were spared for the most part. The lines at ticket counters and outside were typical of any Thursday, and no one seemed to be concerned.

There were a few delays for some locally mainly because ground traffic was halted in Atlanta, the south's major airport hub.

Delays were much worse there and in other parts of the country. Hartsfield-Jackson International in Atlanta, the world's busiest airport, had countless flights that were hours behind schedule.

Bad weather in other parts of the country only compounded the problem.
