JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A 6-month-old baby is still in critical condition in the burn unit at Shands Hospital in Gainesville after a fire erupted in a home on 17th Street in the Springfield neighborhood of Jacksonville on Wednesday night.
Fire investigators said someone in the house tried to move a kerosene heater when kerosene spilled and flames broke out. Jackson Spencer was sitting in his stroller by the door when some of the kerosene spilled on him. He suffered burns over 30 percent of his body.
"I was sitting close by the heater and [my baby] was right by me, and Jackson was sitting at the door, he had just come in from outside," said Natalie Spencer, Jackson's aunt.
Several adults, including a neighbor, frantically tried to put the fire out. Jackson's father suffered burns to his hands and face trying to save his son.
There were nine people in the home at the time of the fire. Six of those were children. They were all taken to Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center for observation.
Natalie Spencer told Channel 4's Dan Leveton that amazingly, the damage was contained inside the house. She said it was somewhat of a miracle that more people were not injured.
"I never experienced it before, I was kind of scared. The only thing I could think about was the kids and getting the fire extinguisher, but I couldn't find it at the time," she said.
Other than Jackson Spencer, no one else remains hospitalized and the house is still standing.
The family said on this holiday, that is something they are thankful for.
