JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- One man has died after an early-morning fire on the westside.

Jacksonville Fire and Rescue said a 911 call came in at about 8 a.m. for a structure fire in the 2200 block of Commonwealth Avenue. Tom Francis with JFRD said neighbors called 911 when they saw flames and smoke coming from the home.

"Firefighters rapidly forced entry into the home and advanced their charge. They began to effectively subdue the flames, but made a very grisly discovery," Francis said.

Francis said firefighters found Alvie Harris, 52, unresponsive. He died at the scene. JFRD said there were no smoke detectors in the home. Fire officials said the preliminary investigation indicated the fire may have been caused by a space heater that was near a couch that caught fire.

Family members said that they just saw Harris Thursday night for Thanksgiving dinner at his sisters house.

"Well, we had Thanksgiving at my house yesterday and we got up and did mud bogging a little bit, cut up some firewood, and had a good lunch. He made some pecan pies and brought them to the house," His brother-in-law, Robert Moore, said.

If the fire was caused by a heater, this would be the second fire in as many days in Jacksonville. Wednesday night a young child was badly burned after a kerosene heater caught fire.
