JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The choice shoppers make at the supermarket checkout -- paper or plastic -- could become a costly one.
Lawmakers in Florida are considering a bag tax that would cost customers extra for each bag they use.
Some shoppers aren't happy to hear about the movement to either put a tax on plastic bags or eventually eliminate them.
"I think that's ridiculous, man," one local shopper said. "Basically, they're trying to get money for everything."
"I don't think they should tax them at all," another shopper said. "You come in the grocery store, everything's high enough. So why put a tax on them?"
The idea is one environmental groups like the Sierra Club have been pushing for in the sunshine state.
"The state goes through a billion bags a year, and according to (the Department of Environmental Protection), these only have a life of 12 minutes but stay in the environment for 10,000 years," said Drew Martin of the Sierra Club said.
To clean up the mess that environmental groups claim plastic bags cause, local supermarkets are pitching in.
Winn-Dixie released this statement Tuesday: "As a more sustainable alternative to plastic and paper bags, we sell a variety of reusable bags and will continue exploring new opportunities."
Publix is doing the same thing. Kelly Jerris bought her bags months ago and still uses them.
"I just got tired of having all the extra bags, and I could get more in these bags," said Jerris of her own bags she uses to carry groceries. "I would always come out with 10 or 12 bags and I can get it all in four of those."
Not every shopper favors bringing their own bags.
"What if you don't bring enough bags," one local shopper said. "Especially women with kids. Moms don't have enough time for that. It's ridiculous."
