JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Sheriff John Rutherford and Fraternal Order of Police President Nelson Cuba and their lawyers went before a judge Monday afternoon.
The union is asking for an injunction against the sheriff's changes in duties for community service officers.
The two sides argued about whether a Florida Department of Law Enforcement commission is the only body that can seek an injunction.
The judge decided to give both sides until March 18 to present their sides of the case, and that's when he will decide if they have legal standing.
Until late February, the yellow-shirted community service officers only handled traffic crashes and directed traffic, and similar tasks because they don't carry guns or badges.
Now, they're allowed to respond to complaints of criminal mischief, car burglaries, and other low-priority calls.
The sheriff said the move will save tax dollars. The union said in the long run, it's not making anyone safer.
