ORANGE PARK, Fla. -- More than 500 Raines High School students were forced to return to school after several altercations at the Skate Station in Orange Park Thursday morning, according to the Clay County Sheriff's Office.
No arrests were made, and all of the students were put back on their 12 buses and taken back to school by administrators.
Two dozen sheriff's deputies and one fire rescue unit were called to the scene in the 200 block of Blanding Boulevard at about 11:20 a.m.
Deputies said there was a tumultuous crowd of students and several altercations in different locations inside of the business.
Deputies said as soon as one altercation was quelled, another would break out.
Three students who deputies described as the "primary agitators" were placed in handcuffs and separated from the crowd.
Several more deputies responded to assist in getting the crowd under control, and once order was restored, the three students who were placed in handcuffs were turned over to Raines High School officials, according to deputies.
Oscar Harris, the vice principal of Raines, told deputies the students were at the Skate Station for a reward for having a 96 percent participation rate in the FCAT.
Harris said the first fight started over several students smoking marijuana in the restroom, according to deputies. Although the odor of marijuana could be smelled, no one was seen smoking marijuana.
The identity of the students smoking marijuana could not be determined, deputies said.
Harris told deputies he did not know why the fights started, but said he and his staff would be looking into the incident and administering disciplinary action where appropriate.
Deputies said Harris and his staff decided to end the outing early because of the fighting, and all of the students returned to their buses in an orderly fashion and were taken back to Raines High School.
There were no reports of injury to any students, deputies said. Prior to the altercations, one student had been taken to a hospital for a possible broken leg while roller skating. A teacher injured her leg when she slipped getting onto a bus, deputies said.
Deputies said the three agitators were released to a Jacksonville Sheriff's Office School Resource Officer and Harris, who took them back to Raines.
Duval County school officials will follow up with the investigation, according to the sheriff's office.
