A family of three is getting Red Cross assistance after a fire destroyed their Northwest Jacksonville home late Friday morning.

Firefighters called to the scene in the 8600 block of Second Avenue said they found heavy flames when they first arrived.

They said the fire was brought under control in about 10 minutes, but the home was gutted.

The homeowner said the fire may have started as the result of some work he was doing on an antique Volkswagen.

Firefighters said several small propane tanks exploded, but no one was hurt.

None of the family's dogs, including four adults and a litter of six or seven puppies, were harmed.
