Gay Advocate Remembered As Pioneer

Roverta Boen Owned Northeast Florida's First Gay Bar

Friends and family gathered in Mayport on Saturday for the funeral of one of northeast Florida's leading gay advocates.

Roverta Boen passed away earlier this week. She was the owner of Bo's Coral Reef bar in Jacksonville Beach, one of the first gay bars in our area.

A viewing and funeral service was held at at Friendship Baptist Church before before a burial at Beaches Memorial Park on Mayport Road.

Boen also led the fight against AIDS. She was 81.
