State To Close Camden Drivers' License Office

POSTED: 11:19 a.m. EDT July 2, 2003

Amid much speculation and conflicting reports, the state issued a statement this week saying that the Kingsland satellite office for the Division of Motor Vehicle Safety will close -- at least temporarily -- on August 1.

Georgia DMVS logoRumors were circulating in Camden County for more than a week that the Kingsland office would close -- something DMVS employees initially denied.

Kingsland's mayor Kenneth Smith said he was taken by surprise by the state's announcement, as the city was in negotiations to get the office to open more than one day a week.

Kingsland provides office space in its City Hall Annex for the DMVS to offer issue and renew drivers' licenses each Thursday.

Once the office closes, Camden County residents will have to drive to offices in Brunswick to handle these transactions.

Officials with the Brunswick office said that budget and personnel constraints lead to the move, and that the agency is under orders to close facilities within 30 of existing DMVS offices -- meaning more than 100 counties in the state will not have a local drivers' license facility.

The DMVS Web site shows that Kingsland is 33 miles from the Brunswick office.
