Kingsland, Camden Offer Help To Keep Drivers' License Office Open

POSTED: 2:56 p.m. EDT July 30, 2003

City leaders in Kingsland and Camden County Sheriff Bill Smith have made overtures to the state Division of Motor Vehicle Safety in an effort to keep the satellite drivers' license office open beyond this week.

Smith said that sheriff's office has offered to pay salaries of the traveling drivers examiners for two years and donate two vehicles for them to commute to Kingsland from their offices in Brunswick and Waycross.

Georgia DMVS logoKingsland City Council on Monday offered to pay for dedicated phone lines and double donated office in the Kingsland City Hall Annex for the DMVS to continue issuing and renewing drivers' licenses each Thursday.

Officials with the Brunswick office said that budget and personnel constraints lead to the state to close all satellite offices within 30 miles of existing DMVS offices -- meaning more than 100 counties in the state will no longer have a local drivers' license facility.

Unless the state accepts the offer of money, cars and larger office space, this Thursday will be last day the Kingsland office will be open.
