Mold In Southside Fire House May Force Temporary Relocation
City Council To Vote On Funding Mobile Home For Firefighters
City officials say water has leaked into the building which was built in the early 1980s as an auto vehicle inspection building. Its metal structure allows little air flow, which has exacerbated the mold.
"The mold was discovered about a month ago when the crews here at station 28 reported that there was some mildew visible at one of the A/C ducts," Jacksonville Fire-Rescue spokesman Tom Francis said.
The clean-up crew dispatched stopped and reported a bigger problem -- mold -- which can potentially cause respiratory problems for people who spend lots of time in the environment.
"Some of the firefighters here, I believe, have complained about sinus problems and things of that nature," Francis told Channel 4's Bruce Hamilton.
Tuesday Jacksonville City Council will vote whether to spend $45,000 on a mobile home to temporarily house some of the firefighters while city workers knock down walls to find out the severity of the mold and decide on a permanent course of action.
The city says Station 28 is one of the busiest fire stations in Jacksonville. Copyright 2003 by News4Jax.com. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.
