Florida Takes Steps To Spread Word On Missing Children

Billboards, E-Mail Alerts To Be Used To Distribute Information

POSTED: Monday, August 18, 2003

Florida law enforcement is turning to billboards and e-mail alerts when a child is missing, hoping the new efforts will in turn bring children in danger home.

Zachary BernhardtGov. Jeb Bush unveiled the new efforts Monday, including an Amber Alert-style billboard which will feature Zachary Bernhardt (pictured, right). The 8-year-old from Clearwater who disappeared nearly three years ago.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is asking people to sign up to receive missing child alerts through e-mail and text pagers. The governor says such technology will allow police to spread the word quickly that a child has been abducted.

People interested in getting the alerts can signup through a new Web site set up by the FDLE.
