JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is running a major campaign promoting its religion on local television stations.
If you've been watching any TV lately, you've probably noticed, one of the biggest advertising pushes on local airwaves right now isn't a product or even a political campaign, it's ads from the Mormon Church, or Latter-day Saints. Jacksonville is one of nine media markets in the country where the LDS church is conducting a major ad campaign promoting its religion.
Members say lot of people have misconceptions about the religion, and they want to inform the public about the truths of their religion.
"People that do not know a Mormon might think they're polygamists, sexists and bigots," said Ron Wilson, the marketing manager of
from mormon.org told Channel 4. "When reversed, with people who do know a Mormon, they don't believe any of those myths."
A lot of people Channel 4 talked to admit they don't know much about Mormonism beyond historical stories of polygamy and claims the religion is a cult. Channel 4 spoke with a group of mormon missionaries from the West Coast that is visiting Jacksonville and they are excited to see the ads.
The type of misconception the church says it's fighting against was exemplified a couple years ago when federal agents raided a polygamist compound in Texas and removed children. The church says that type of lifestyle has nothing to do with the mainstream Mormon Church.
This isn't the first time the LDS Church has taken to the airwaves. Over the years, it has had numerous ad campaigns to attract new members. This recent ad is designed to show that Mormons are just like everyone else said Wilson.
