JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Three children were hurt -- one seriously -- Thursday night when the all-terrain vehicle they were riding turned into the path of a car in Nassau County.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the Honda ATV with three children on board was eastbound on the shoulder of Roberts Road, north of Callahan, when it did a U-turn in front of a car The ATV overturned, throwing all the children.
FHP said the ATV was being driven by Shaneese Bailey, 9, of Callahan. Briana Eleby, 8, and 13-month-old
Anthony Brown (pictured, left) -- both of Jacksonville -- were passengers on the vehicle.
Brown was flown by air ambulance to Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center with head injuries and was in serious condition. Bailey and Eleby were treated and released from the hospital.
FHP Lt. Bill Leeper said charges of allowing unauthorized use of an ATV are pending against Alma Bailey, Shaneese's mother. In addition, none of the three children was wearing a helmet -- which is against the law.
Leeper said there would be no charges against Christopher Garard, 21, the driver of the car.
Two weeks ago, five children under the age of 14 were killed and a sixth child seriously injured when they were riding an ATV on a road in Coffee County, Ga. In that case, the driver of the car that hit them was charged with DUI.
