ORLANDO, Fla. -- A 22-year-old woman was arrested Tuesday after authorities found her Great Dane dogs locked in cages and near death in an Orlando apartment covered with feces.
Police said Meghan Powers (pictured, right) was arrested and charged with animal neglect at her MetroPlace apartment located at 919 Kirkman Road.
Neighbors complained to apartment management Monday about a foul odor coming from Powers' home.
When officials investigated, they found Powers living in an apartment filled with feces and her starving dogs just hours from death.
"It is tragic," Orange County Animal Services spokeswoman Venetta Valdengo-Blevins said. "It truly brings tears to your eyes. The dogs were locked in crates, no food, no water and covered in feces. The apartment was covered in feces."
WKMG-TV in Orlando reported that one of the dogs was found so thin that he only weighed 68 pounds -- about half of what he should weigh. The dogs were also found with sores on their bodies.
It has not been determined if the dogs will survive.
