Man Uses Toddler As Human Shield
Officers responded to a domestic dispute between 24-year-old Jason Moses (pictured, right) and his wife, who were fighting on their front porch. Their 3-year-old son was with them during the argument.
Investigators said they thought they had the situation under control. According to police reports, Moses' wife was leaving in her truck, when Moses allegedly yelled, "Sike," and ran off the porch, pinning his wife against the truck.
Deputies then pulled out their tasers and threatened to use them. Investigators said Moses responded by grabbing his son and holding him up as a shield against the tasers.
"As soon as the deputy realized the man's intent was to shield himself against the taser, then he reholstered his taser. … One deputy secured the child the best he could, while the other deputy took the gentleman away from the child and placed him in handcuffs," said Lt. Gary Bowling, of the Putnam County Sheriff's Department.
No one was tasered or hurt. Moses was arrested and taken to jail, and the boy was turned over to his mother. Though Moses is now out of jail, he has been ordered to stay away from his wife and child.
Police said they couldn't believe a man would actually use a child as a shield. Moses' neighbors agreed.
"I'm surprised he used a kid. That's kind of a cheap thing to have to do," said neighbor Jim Bryan.
Moses was charged with child abuse. After he was arrested, he told police he was sorry, but he had seen tasers before and he didn't want that to happen to him. He said he just wasn't thinking.
