Navy Moving Southern Command HQ To Mayport
POSTED: 1:44 p.m. EST January 23, 2004
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A key Navy command post, currently headquartered at Naval Station Roosevelt Roads in Puerto Rico, is moving to Naval Station Mayport, according to U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson.
Mayport was among eight potential sites throughout the southeast considered for the U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command. The move is expected to take place in February and will bring approximately 150 jobs, including active duty and civilian personnel.
SOUTHCOM -- also called NavSouth -- which oversees all naval affairs in the Caribbean, the Gulf of Mexico and South America, is headed by a rear admiral who reports to the U.S. Southern Command in Miami.
Nelson said the addition of another significant Navy post in Jacksonville will benefit the entire city.
"This is great news for Jacksonville," Nelson said. "It's an economic bonus because of the added jobs. But, more importantly, it strengthens Mayport's hand in the upcoming round of base closings."
The Base Realignment and Closure process already is underway with recommendations expected by the spring of 2005.
"I think this is a real encouraging sign for the area," said Mayor John Peyton.
The Commander of Naval Forces Southern Command who will be moving to Mayport is Rear Adm. Vinson Smith. Smith has served in numerous commands throughout the world during his 30-year career.
By law, the new command must be relocated no later than March 31.
