Northside Library Supporters Balking At Plan To Move Money
POSTED: 9:25 a.m. EST January 30, 2004
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A Northside group is pressuring the city to keep all the money promised for improvements to improve the Highlands Branch library.
Under the Better Jacksonville Plan, 12 libraries in the city were scheduled for renovation, including the Highlands branch.
But some projects -- including Highlands -- are costing less than the funds allocated, while other renovations are coming in over budget. So the mayor is proposing redistributing the $55 million available to make them all happen.
"What we're doing now is proposing to council that we, basically, reallocate some of those dollars," Jacksonville Mayor John Peyton said. "All this money would stay within the library budget. Were basically reallocating among various branches."
This issue is now hung up in City Council because some councilors feel they shouldn't have to give away money that was promised to their district.
