Florida Turnpike Crash Kills 3 Children In Osceola

Police: Minivan's Tire Blows North Of Yehaw Junction

POSTED: Monday, March 22,
UPDATED: 8:02 am EST March 22,2004

A multiple-vehicle crash on the Florida Turnpike in Osceola County, Fla., Sunday night killed three children, according to WKMG-TV in Orlando.

The Florida Highway Patrol said a Ford minivan carrying three children and their parents was headed north when the right rear tire blew just north of Yehaw Junction.

The woman driving the minivan lost control and crossed the median and was hit by a Lincoln Town car.

The van was hit and spun and was hit again by a Chevy van carrying a baseball team from Minnesota, according to Local 6 News.

"They (victims) went through the median and it (minivan) started to rotate," Florida Highway Patrol spokesman Jim Hobby said. "When it crossed into the southbound lanes, it was struck by an oncoming Lincoln."

Two of the children died at the crash scene. A third child from the same family died at a local hospital.

The children's mother was transported to a hospital in serious condition and the father was also injured in the crash.

The turnpike was closed to traffic for several hours after the crash.
