2-year-old hit and killed, police searching for driver

Police say driver stopped for a moment, but then took off

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 2-year-old girl was hit and killed Sunday on the Southside and police are now searching for the driver, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Police said it happened at the Harold House apartment complex on Ring Lane around 5:15 p.m. Sunday.

JSO said a car was driving through the complex when suddenly, the little girl was hit. They said the driver stopped for a moment, but then left.

"We have a couple of people who saw at least part of this. We believe there's more people," said Det. Gregory of JSO. "We'd like to ask them to cooperate. Give us as much information as they can give us so we can solve this."

Police said they have an idea of the make and model of the car, but at this time, they're not releasing that information.

JSO said the girl was taken to UF Health in critical condition, but later died.

"I don't know, it's unexplainable. It's just, I feel sorry for the parents," said Carlos Lawrence, who lives in the neighborhood. "I hope they catch the person who did it because whoever did it, they deserve to get caught."

In the meantime, residents and neighbors are left with a bad feeling and they won't feel better until person responsible is caught.

"Should have stayed. Should have stayed," said Lawrence. "Whether it was a man or a woman who did it, hopefully they'll get them."
