Camden Authorities Practice For Confrontation With G8 Protestors

ST. MARYS, Ga. -- In a dress rehearsal for what authorities hope never happens, Camden County law enforcement and public safety personnel trained Wednesday for potential confrontation with protestors during next month's G8 Summit.

At a drill just outside the Kings Bay submarine base, Marines played the role of protestors, carrying signs and charging police dressed in newly acquired riot gear.
Camden County deputies, along with police officers from Kingsland and St. Marys, firefighters and other personnel were involved in the exercise.
"You've got to be ready for it in case it happens, because if not, it can get out of hand real fast," Camden County Sheriff's Office Lt. William Terrell said.
Camden officials told Channel 4's Scott Johnson that they are especially concerned because the Kings Bay naval base has drawn protestors in the past -- and because the county is receiving none of the federal or state security assistance that the Brunswick and Savannah areas will receive.
"We've been actively training for this for the last six months," Terrell said. "We're doing every thing we can."
The training came on the same day as news came from the FBI and Homeland Security officials that a terror attack in America this summer is likely, and the G8 Summit was one of the potential targets mentioned in the warning.
Some spectators watching the drill were concerned.
"I have a 2-year-old son, and, not living too far from a nuclear base .... It really does concern me," Travis Clark said. "This would be a very good, key place to attack."
