Floridians Driving To Georgia For Mega Millions Tickets

POSTED: Friday, July 2, 2004

Floridians are making a run for the border, driving north in hopes of cashing in on the multi-state Mega Millions lottery drawing.

The jackpot has climbed to a record $290 million heading into Friday night’s drawing.

The game is played in 11 states, but Georgia is the closest state to Florida that is part of the Mega Millions contest.

Lottery players from the Sunshine State have been making the journey across the state line to take a shot at the grand prize.

One convenience store is less than a mile across the border and has seen a steady stream of Floridians come through its doors the past couple of days.

The estimated $290 million jackpot would be the sixth-biggest in U.S. history. The biggest was the $363 million jackpot that went to two winners in a May 2000 drawing of The Big Game, Mega Millions' predecessor.

The big money has people driving from as far away as Miami to buy their tickets.
