JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Authorities continue to search for a woman ejected from her vehicle Thursday night while driving over the Mathews Bridge. As people comb the St. Johns River, the family hopes for a miracle.
"If anybody can just help us find something that would be appreciated," said Donna Campbell's oldest daughter, Cecelia Lee. "I mean, all we can do is just wait."
Lee was driving ahead of her mother on the Mathews Bridge when she saw her mother lose control of her Jeep and get thrown from the vehicle into the St. Johns below.
"They were following me; I saw it in my rearview mirror," Lee recalled.
Both Campbell and her 13-year-old son were ejected from the vehicle. The teen landed on the bridge and suffered only minor injuries.
Lee said her brother waited all night by the bridge, holding their mother's purse and hoping she would be found.
"He's a little bit shaken up," Lee said.
She was in town for a week, visiting from Louisiana. The family was returning to Campbell's apartment from the Amtrak station after Lee missed the 5 p.m. train.
"The roads were wet. The steel grate -- it's easy to lose control," Lee explained.
Now, the family can only wait for word that the mother of three has been found.
