'Emergency' Resolution To Fix Mathews Bridge Sits Unsigned

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A week after the City Council passed an emergency resolution demanding the state fix the Mathews Bridge, Channel 4 has learned that it is still sitting on Mayor John Peyton's desk waiting to be signed.
The measure was introduced by councilman Lake Ray following the death of Donna Campbell, who police say lost control of her Jeep on the bridge's grating and was thrown into the river.
Campbell's death was just the most serious recent incident after years of complaints and hundreds of accidents on the grating.
Ray says he's disappointed it's taking Mayor John Peyton so long to sign the resolution.
A aide to the mayor said no one told them this resolution was an emergency -- until now.
"It's come to our attention that the council wants it more urgently, so he will sign it and get it back to them," mayor's spokesperson Suzie Wiles said. "We're in accord that safety is the primary concern."
Once signed, the resolution will ask the state Department of Transportation to fix or replace the grating on the bridge by Dec. 1 -- a deadline the department says might be difficult to prove the grating is the problem and how best to fix it.
