Deputies responding to a disturbance call about 9:30 a.m. at a State Road 13 address in Fruit Cove found several women in the corner of the parking lot. Two women said Fabiola Armitage was taking down George W. Bush campaign signs, and there was a confrontation when someone tried to stop her.

According to authorities, at one point in the argument, Armitage opened the door of her vehicle, striking a 43-year-old woman in the back.

Deputies said they found 78 political signs for Bush and Mel Martinez inside her vehicle. She is accused of removing them from the roadside or private property.

Armitage was charged with battery and grand theft and booked into the St. Johns County Jail.

The signs were returned to a representative of the Republican Party.
