3rd annual Week of Valor set in Jacksonville

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – It will be a week to honor the sacrifice of Jacksonville's military servicemen and women.

On Monday, the city announced the third annual Week of Valor. It includes a variety of events, all to show how the community appreciates and supports those who have served in the United States Armed Forces.

"I think the ability to show them, to say more than just say thank you, not just in words but in deeds, to make sure we help them and their spouses their family members," Mayor Alvin Brown said.

He said the Week of Valor is committed to building a stronger connection to the River City's military and veterans community.

The dates for this year's events are Nov. 4-11. The week will start with a Military Appreciation Luncheon.

There will be a job fair, a mental health summit, a 5K run, a ceremony for fallen heroes, a concert, the Veterans Day Parade, along with one last salute to vets on Veterans Day.

"You see the events and the lineup and that just shows how many different organizations and different entities really want to step forward and contribute and say thank you. That's very humbling," said Rear Adm. Mary Jackson, commander of Navy Region Southeast.

Brown said the military presence in the region is valued at $14 billion. He said that's why it's important to give back to a community that has given so much, not only in service but to the growth of the city.
