4 Kingfish Tournament Boaters Rescued

Group Of Fisherman Make Life-Saving Catch

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Randall Thompson and his three fellow fisherman thought their luck had finally changed Friday afternoon. After hours of dropping a line in the Greater Jacksonville Kingfish tournament, they finally got a fish to bite.

But their luck would soon change when the boat they were on suddenly began to take on water.

"The captain told us, 'Get ready, we're going down'", Thompson said Saturday at Sisters Creek Marina.

Water started filling the cabin. Thompson, a charter fisherman with more than thirty years of experience, said it was like nothing he had ever seen.

"The water kicked up a little bit and bumping around a little bit. The next thing we know, we're running along and the boat just won't get back down on plane," he said.

The crew sent out a distress call and within twenty-five minutes other fisherman began showing up to help.

The four were able to get on board another vessel and were taken to shore. They had to leave their boat behind. It was later rescued and brought to land.

Thompson said he'd like to meet the crew of the boat that saved them so he can say thank you

"Getting back on land to see my grandkids again. That meant a lot to me. Hugging my grandbabies again," he said.
