Brantley County Authorities Investigate 2nd Homicide

UPDATED: 8:00 am EST December 28, 2004

Authorities in Brantley County are investigating two homicides over two days last week.

Investigators said 38-year-old Jerry David Chambers died from a single gunshot wound to the chest outside his Nahunta home Wednesday night. Investigators say he was arguing with Marvin Lee Smith, 59, at the time.

They say Chambers was dating Smith's daughter, who has a 12-year-old son. Smith reportedly confronted the man for abusing the boy. Chambers had a criminal record dating back to 1998, including convictions for assault and battery, simple battery and terroristic threats and acts -- all in Cherokee County.

Authorities say no charges have been filed against Smith because they don't know if he murdered the victim or if it was self defense. They say Chambers also had a weapon at one point.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation agents hope to complete their investigation within two weeks and present it to District Attorney Rick Currie.

Officials don’t believe that Chambers' death is related to the shooting death of 17-year-old Megan Victoria Lake the day before. The Hoboken-area teenager known as Tori was killed by a single shot from a shotgun about 7:44 a.m. Tuesday.

Rodney Lee Driggers, 27, was charged with one count of homicide and one count of feticide in the case. Brantley County Sheriff Robert Thomas said Driggers and Lake apparently lived together and she was expecting a baby in March.
