Teen Suspects In Tennessee Murder Passed Through Jax Beach

POSTED: Friday, December 31, 2004

The trail of two teenagers wanted in connection with killing a classmate and wounding another on Christmas Day in east Tennessee leads through Jacksonville Beach, police said Friday.

Osborne - OverbayNicholas A. Overbay, 17, and Corey A. Osborne, 16, are charged with first-degree murder in the shooting of former schoolmate Joshua Wayne Tilson, 18, of Kingsport, Tenn. Tilson was a graduate of Dobyns-Bennett High School, where the two suspects are juniors.

Tilson was shot once in the head, while another other 17-year-old, also a student at the school, was shot three times in the left arm as he apparently ran for help, authorities said.

Tennessee authorities issued a nationwide bulletin to law enforcement agencies for Overbay and Osborne. They said the teens were traveling in a green 1996 Honda Civic and should be considered armed and dangerous.

"We felt like they had already packed their suitcases and were ready to leave and, yes, we feel like there is premeditation in this murder," Sullivan County Sheriff Wayne Anderson said Thursday in a nationally broadcast television interview.

Investigators said the teens asked a clerk in Asheville, N.C., to phone their parents and claim that the two were in Cleveland, Ohio. The clerk called police instead, but the two teens had left before authorities got there.

Tennessee investigators said the boys told witnesses they were headed for Atlanta or Mexico. Police were following dozens of leads have poured in from at least 12 states, including evidence they were in Jacksonville Beach early this week.

"The only concrete evidence they say they have is that the teens were in North Carolina, South Carolina, and made a call home late Sunday night from Jacksonville, Fla.," Anderson said.

Osborne has brown hair, hazel eyes, weighs about 180 pounds, and is about 5 feet 11 inches tall. Overbay has brown hair, blue eyes, weighs about 125 pound, and is about 5 feet 8 inches tall.

Anyone with any information about this crime is asked to call the Sullivan County Sheriff's Department at (423) 279-7331.
