Emotions, Security Heightened In Day 2 Of Triple-Murder Trial

POSTED: Tuesday, March 29, 2005

It was another emotional day in the courtroom for Leon Kirkland, whose children Chris and Deon were gunned down, along with their aunt, Johnnie Gatlin, in September 2002. Jurors were shown graphic photographs of the deceased as prosecutors established their case against Carlton Lumpkins.

Carlton Lumpkins
Lumpkins is charged with three counts of first-degree murder, though his council contends he was not at the scene when the murders occurred. Leon Kirkland couldn't watch as jurors were shown morgue photographs of all three bodies.

Kirkland, as well as family and friends, were removed from the courtroom for the second day in a row as prosecutors revealed crime scene photographs and other pieces of evidence, including Chris Kirkland's football pads and Deon Kirkland's portable video game unit.

Leon Kirkland
Chris Kirkland was returning from football practice at the time of the murders, and Deon Kirkland was thought to be playing video games in the back seat of Gatlin's car when he was shot nine times.

In an effort to dispel any outbursts brought on by emotional distress, the judge presiding over the Lumpkins trial has tightened security. Every person in the courtroom -- including Channel 4's Jennifer Waugh -- was subjected to a search by security personnel and had to pass through a metal detector before entering.

State attorney Harry Shorstein is expected to call a key witness to the stand Wednesday. Maurice Silas -- along with Latroy Beaunight -- was arrested in connection with the shooting, and he earlier pleaded guilty.
