Coast Guard Calls Off Search For Brunswick Men

POSTED: Tuesday, April 19, 2005

The Coast Guard Tuesday afternoon suspended its search for two Brunswick men who never returned from an apparent fishing trip in the Turtle River over the weekend. But local officials said that the Georgia Department of National Resources and the Glynn County Search and Rescue unit continue efforts to find them.

Turtle Creek mapEric Dykstra, 21, and Josh Dykstra, 22, were reported missing Monday afternoon to the Coast Guard. The two cousins were last seen at Spanky's restaurant about 7 p.m. Sunday evening.

A search Monday evening and Tuesday turned up one Eric Dykstra's truck and boat trailer parked at the Highway 99 boat ramp, and later, his 14-foot boat tangled in some marsh in the river south of Brunswick.

The boat still had two life jackets and other personal belongings still on board.

The Coast Guard, along with agents of DNR, a helicopter from Savannah, Brunswick Police and Brunswick Emergency Management Association searched an area of 130 square miles along the river.

"One of the hardest decisions I have to make as a commanding officer is to suspend a search when people are still missing," said Cmdr. Catherine Haines, commanding officer of Coast Guard Group Mayport. "I have spoken with the family and my thoughts and prayers are with them and their friends. We want the family to know we, along with our partners, put all our resources into finding Eric and Josh Dykstra."
