Waterways Commission Votes To Demolish Old Fuller Warren Bridge

POSTED: Thursday, May 5, 2005

The Jacksonville Waterways Commission voted unanimously Thursday to recommend the old Fuller Warren Bridge be demolished -- not turned into a fishing pier as many people have requested.

Fuller Warren BridgeThe commission cited safety issues, along with congestion and lack of parking around Baptist Medical Center as reasons the old bridge would not be suitable for a public pier.

They suggested better locations might be at the Shipyards or the site of the old JEA Southside generating station.

Last week, the commission released a study showing that transforming what's left of the river crossing that once carried Interstate 95 traffic into a fishing pier would cost $2.7 million.

Those fighting to save the bridge told Channel 4 that the commission's decision is just a recommendation, and that the City Council has the final say.

Department of Transportation officials have said they will demolish the existing structure if the conversion to a fishing pier is deemed too expensive.
