MELROSE, Fla. -- A 50-year-old man was killed and a 46-year-old woman was seriously injured in a shooting in western Putnam County early Thursday morning.
Putnam County sheriff's deputies responded to a travel-trailer on County Living Estates on state Road 26 near Melrose just after 6 a.m.
Inside they found the body of Willie Durden and his companion, Janice Kalogiros, shot. She was airlifted to Shands-Gainesville Medical Center, where she was listed in critical but stable condition.
A neighbor said that Kalogiros was coherent after the shooting and told him that somebody had robbed them.
Putnam County Sheriff Dean Kelly said more than a dozen detectives and others of his staff were involved in processing the scene and interviewing witnesses. He told Channel 4's Hetal Gandhi that drugs may have been involved in the shooting, although no drugs or firearms were found at the scene.
"Just from some of the witnesses statements that we've gotten so far indicating there may be some involvement," Kelly said. "But it's way too early in the investigation to pin that down and say that's a root part of this shooting."
No suspects had been identified and the motive for the shooting was still listed as unknown.
