5-month-old baby in South Fla. dies after being beaten

Baby Andres pulled off life support at Miami Children's Hospital

MIAMI – A 5-month-old baby was pulled off life support Saturday after police say he was severely beaten by his mother's boyfriend.

Antwan Sawyer, 27, was in bond court Friday after prosecutors raised his charges from aggravated child abuse to attempted felony murder.

Sawyer told investigators the baby fell of the bed, but doctors told police baby Andres' injuries were non-accidental.

WPLG-TV reports Andres was hospitalized at Miami Children's Hospital on Monday with severe brain injuries, a lung contusion, retinal hemorrhaging to both eyes and bruising to his buttocks.

According to the arrest report, the injuries occurred while the baby was alone in a car with Sawyer.

His injuries were so severe, baby Andres had to be pulled off life support Saturday afternoon.

Since Andres did not survive, prosecutors said they will likely charge Sawyer with murder.

Sawyer is being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on no bond.

Family and friends of the baby's biological father have set up a "Justice for Baby Andres" Facebook page. A Go Fund Me page has also been set up for baby Andres.
