Manhunt Continues For Suspect In Central Fla. Deputy Shooting

POSTED: Wednesday, October 12, 2005

Investigators in Orange County, Fla., released a name and photo of the man they believe shot and seriously injured an Orange County sheriff's deputy before vanishing into a neighborhood.

Orange County deputy suspectA photo of Jeffery Forbes, 22, was released Tuesday -- hours after police released a composite showing the man who they believe critically injured Deputy Adam Pierce, 25.

Sheriff's investigators said they had pinpointed Forbes earlier Tuesday but held off releasing the information to the public, thinking they could apprehend him without releasing the photo and spooking him.

However, the sheriff's office felt it was now important to show Forbes' photo since he is considered armed and dangerous.

"The fact is we still have a gunman running around in the community, so we have people in the area doing what we can," said Jim Solomons, a spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators said that they are working some "very strong" leads in the case.

"We are not going to give up until we have the people in custody and we have some very, very good leads as we speak," Orange County Sheriff Kevin Beary said Tuesday.

Investigators said the incident began when Deputy Robert White was driving by a gas station in the area at 6:30 p.m. Monday and noticed suspicious activity between a man in a vehicle and a man on a bicycle.

White called for backup and approached the scene, Solomons said.

When the second deputy, Pierce, arrived, the man on the bicycle took off, leading Pierce on a foot chase. The man ran back to the gas station and White zapped him with a stun gun, but it did not work, Solomons said.

The man got up and shot Pierce twice, according to reports.

White then shot the suspect, who fled on foot and got away, Solomons said.

"We believe he was hit," said Lt. Al Rollins, a sheriff's spokesman.

Pierce was in stable condition at a local hospital Tuesday.

A $10,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the man's capture.

Anyone with information concerning this crime is asked to call Crimeline at (800) 423-TIPS.
