Making Sure Sex Offenders Don't Trick Children
POSTED: Monday, October 31, 2005
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- As children don costumes and parents finalize decorations and light pumpkins, law enforcement officials are making sure sexual offenders are where they should be and that they are obeying court-ordered restrictions this Halloween.
According to the Florida Department of Corrections, some sexual offenders and predators are supervised, others are not -- but the state keeps track of where anyone convicted of sex crimes lives.
"Those who are supervised ... also have as a rule of their supervision that they cannot be near children," the DOC's Robby Cunningham said. "For that group of sexual offenders and predators, as far as Halloween goes, they can't decorate. They can't do anything to lure kids. They can't go to where kids are going to be."
State officials say these restrictions don't apply to all convicted offenders, so they urge parents and children to learn where sexual offenders in their neighborhood live.
The FDLE's
Web site allows searching by county and by ZIP code, but also allows proximity searches of up to 5 miles from any address.
