Rifle-Toting Orange Park Man Killed In Camden Traffic Stop

ORANGE PARK, Fla. -- The Clay County man shot and killed after a police pursuit on Interstate 95 in northern Camden County Tuesday afternoon had a criminal record, but no history of violence.
Authorities said Charles Lamb Jr. was shot after pointing a rifle at a deputy. Lamb died at the scene.
The traffic stop came after a witness told a deputy that Lamb was pointing a gun at motorists on I-95. Camden Sheriff Bill Smith said Lamb refused to drop the rifle during an initial stop, then, after a six-mile high-speed chase, got out of his pickup truck and raised the gun at the deputy.
"(He) got out with the weapon in his hand -- which turned out to be a .30-caliber lever-action rifle -- and pointed it at the deputy," Smith said. "He's already fired one round, accidentally, I guess -- hit the guy's truck. And then he pointed the gun at the deputy, and when he did, the deputy had to shoot the individual."
According to the Clay County Sheriff's Office, Lamb's only arrests were for burglary, petty theft and driving under the influence.
Smith said they still don't know why Lamb acted the way he did, but mentioned that "suicide by police" is one possibility.
The Georgia Department of Law Enforcement has taken over the investigation, while the deputy, whose identity has not been released, was placed on administrative leave. Those are standard procedures after a police-involved shooting.
