Waldon's Wife Arrested On Worthless-Check Charge
Arrest Stems From $10 Bad Check In 1998
While Waldon (pictured, left) may have been suspicious about her arrest on an outstanding warrant, officers at the jail aren't surprised. Officers say that they routinely check the backgrounds of people visiting the jail.
"Here at the jail, anybody who comes in the building, we have the right to run their name, plus it's a way to clear up warrants stacked up over at the courthouse," jail spokesman Greg Fields said.
Waldon's husband is accused of strangling Southside businessman Sami Safar in the back of his patrol car. Waldon's brother, James Swift, is accused in the same murder.
Waldon has been quoted as saying that her arrest is a conspiracy and an attempt to put pressure on her husband. Waldon's attorney said that he's keeping an eye on the incident and if there is what he sees as a pattern of harassment, then he'll investigate. In the meantime, he expects the charges against Walden to be dropped.
"If this is a $10 check from three years ago, we expect the state attorney's office to do what it's supposed to do and dismiss the charges because the statute of limitations has run," Waldon's attorney, Russell Smith, (pictured, right) said.
Waldon was also quoted as saying that she didn't know about the bad check charge, but the state attorney's office said that Waldon was sent a letter asking her to clear up the $10 check.
The assistant chief state attorney said that she was given the same opportunity on a bad check charge in 1996 and she paid it off. Eyewitness News tried to reach Waldon, but her mother-in-law said that she was out of town.
