'Aunt Jemima' Arrested At City Council Meeting

POSTED: Thursday, December 1, 2005

A local community activist was arrested after speaking her opinion at City Hall.

Jackie Brown, a local advocate for minority business owners, was arrested as she spoke to City Council members.

At a recent council meeting, Brown demanded to be heard and was removed from the council chambers when she refused to stop speaking.

Brown has been going to city hall for the past two years, arguing what she said is a lack of opportunities for minority contractors.

However, in the last city council meeting Council President Kevin Hyde said she went too far.

In the meeting, Brown was dressed as Aunt Jemima. She was tackled and removed from the meeting for resisting arrest and disturbing a lawful assembly.

“To keep me from talking during public comments because of my dress and they were offended by what I said,” Brown said.

Hyde said Brown’s dress was fine, but the way she spoke was not.

“Some of the terms that were used, I thought were very racially derogatory, ” Hyde said.

Hyde said Brown specifically crossed the line when her comments targeted certain City Council leaders.

On the back of the blue speaker cards it is written that, “any person, not a council member, making impertinent or slanderous remarks or who shall become boisterous, shall be barred from future audience before the council.”

Later, at a protest, Brown called for a recall of City Council leaders.

“The black council members get into their positions and forget about constituents they promised when they were elected,” Brown said.

Council Member Arthur Brown said Brown is entitled to her opinion, but that he thinks Hyde did the right thing by cutting off her speech.

Brown said she would continue to exercise her First Amendment right to free speech.

Hyde said it is well within his rights to maintain order at a City Council meeting.

The rules state the Brown could be barred from City Council meetings for the next year; whether or not that rule will be put into action has not been decided.
