Man Charged With DUI After Fatal Christmas Crash

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. -- One person died and seven others were injured when a man accused of drunken driven allegedly crossed into oncoming traffic on state Road 210 Christmas Day.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Wayne Syverud, 60, of Jacksonville, was driving west about 6 p.m. when he crossed the center line into the path of two eastbound cars.
The first of those two cars swerved off the road to avoid the oncoming car, but was struck in the rear. The driver and passengers in that car -- John and Margo Aguilera and their 21-month-old son, Matthew -- were injured.
Syverud's car continued and plowed into the other car, killing 48-year-old David Kenna, of Tampa, and critically injuring two of his grandchildren, and sending his wife and a third child to area hospitals.
Chelsea Robinson, 12, and Jacob Robinson, 6, were airlifted to Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center, where they remained in critical condition Monday afternoon.
Donna Kenna, 61, and Emily Robinson, 14, were brought to Baptist South Medical Center. Kenna was in fair condition Monday morning. Robinson was treated and released.
Syverud was charged with one count of DUI manslaughter, four counts of DUI serious bodily injury and two counts of DUI property damage. He was being held in the St. Johns County Jail on $5,000 bond.
