Local Activist Banned From Jacksonville City Council Meetings
POSTED: Wednesday, January 11, 2006
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The clash between local activist Jackie Brown and the Jacksonville City Council led to Brown being banned from Council meetings.
Brown's punishment stemmed from an incident that took place during a November 2005 Council meeting when she dressed as Aunt Jemima to voice her concerns about business opportunities for minorities.
Brown was told by the council president to sit down after she referred to council members as, "Uncle Toms and Aunt Jemimas."
When Brown got up to speak again, she was physically removed from the meeting and arrested.
The city's general counsel wrote a letter to Brown's attorney, stating: "Given Ms. Brown's persistent refusal to comply with the Council President's directives at the Council meeting on November 22nd, 2005, and her disruption at the meeting, I am confident the Council President acted well within his discretion when he barred Ms. Brown from further audience before the Council on that date. The videotapes speak for themselves."
Brown will be barred from attending City Council meetings until April 1.
Channel 4 attempted to speak with Brown to get her side of the story but was unable to contact her.
