The discovery of a burning cross with the letters "KKK" scrawled on it in the yard of interracial couple in New Smyrna Beach, Fla., has prompted an FBI investigation into the apparent hate crime.
Candy Rene, who is German, said someone screamed obscenities from a car window before her family found the large cross at their home on Swamp Deer Road.
Rene said someone also repeatedly ran over and killed her son's dog several weeks ago.
The woman said she believes her family has been targeted by neighbors because she is German and her husband is black.
"I'm not scared of them whatsoever," Rene said. "I'm disgusted with them. There is nothing they can do to scare me. My problem is how my son is going to grow up and what is he going to think."
Rene said she is not leaving the neighborhood despite the threats.
The FBI and Volusia County Sheriff's deputies are investigating the incidents at the home.
"There is absolutely no place in society for this type of incident," Volusia County Sheriff's spokesman Gary Davidson said.
